I went to watch Corinne Bailey Rae perform last night at National Sawdust in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. First of all, the venue is ridiculous. Such a cool vibe. Great acoustics with bright white walls and interesting fluorescent bulb lighting against the walls. Corinne Bailey Rae is often considered to be that sweet girl-next-door type, soft-spoken, unassuming and beautiful. She is all of those things but so much more. I got to witness an artist who came on stage to bare her soul, to share her experiences and to take us all on a journey. It was humbling and inspiring.
These words below really stuck with me and I wanted to share them with you.
“People always try to advice you and put you in a box and say you need to stick to a certain style because if you switch… people might not like it. And if you do this, they won’t like that. But I’ve always felt that my audience are just like me and like to go on a journey…”
In marketing, people always say ‘know your target audience’, ‘know who you’re marketing your product to’ etc. This to me is the same thing. Know your audience and know what they appreciate about you. As long as you are being yourself, you have a better chance of carrying people along with you who truly love you for the fact that you are staying true to your growth.
